Just in time for summer, we are stocking the new popsicle maker set by Zoku. It works like a modern ice cream machine; you keep the non-electric quick pop maker in the freezer and then make pops whenever the mood strikes. Pops freeze in 7-9 minutes, just pour in juice and watch it freeze. Add fruit slices, candy, nuts, or make stripes with yogurt for a one-of-a-kind pop! We have a tool kit, pop storage container, and a quick pop recipe book available also. This super-cool set is a perfect remedy for our North State summer heat!

Paper Bake-ware

We’ll be hosting Stacey, from Two Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, who will be showing her locally made pie birds. We love her old-fashioned, hand painted pie birds which vent your double-crust pie so juices don’t boil over, dirtying up your oven. Pie birds were recently featured in both Martha Stewart Living and Country Living magazines because they are both functional and decorative. (For more information on how to get involved with this wonderful organization, visit their web page: www.woundedwarriorproject.org) That day we also had a pressure cooking and canning class with Chef Pam. We offered our raffle tickets to the participants and a student in the class, Deborah Baldwin-Pulcini donated and won the raffle! She and husband Joseph Pulcini will be taking a cooking class in the future. Deborah recently visited Disneyland and during the Retiring of the Colors ceremony the crowd was asked if there were any veterans present as they like to honor any vets present. Since Deborah’s “semi-son,” John Joy is in the Air Force in Balad, Iraq, she had the couple’s photo taken with the color guard and posted the it on facebook which is easily visited by the soldiers. We’re happy to report that due to everyone’s generous donations, we are sending the Wounded Warrior Project a check for $100!

Babycakes Cupcake Maker

It’s electric! It bakes 8 mini cupcakes in 5-8 minutes! It’s pink! It’s the cutest electric gadget we’ve gotten in is quite some time. Priced at 39.99, it’s a very cool thing for Grandma or Mom to do with the kids and would be very fun at a children’s birthday party. It comes with a little cookbook with some interesting ideas, not all cupcake-related, such as one and two crust mini pies and savory appetizers. We think it’s pretty fun for little and big bakers!

Cast Iron Cooking Season

Shari ordered some new Lodge pieces that we haven’t had before so if you are a cast iron fan (like we are!) come in soon for best selection of cool Lodge cast iron.

Escali Scales

We received our compact-sized kitchen scales from Escali, the Pico series. They retail for 23.95 and have all the functions and features of their bigger counterparts.
By California standards, the tasty “hot” Slather Sauce isn’t very hot but it is really delicious. Made in South Carolina, Shari and Marsha sampled it at the show and ordered the original Slather Sauce in the blue packaging and the tiny bit spicier red-labeled version. Chef Pam recently mixed both together to make the sauce for her pressure-cooked pulled pork sliders and that was tasty by any standard. We currently have both the 5 ounce and 12 ounce bottles.

Housewares Show

Shari and Marsha are on their annual buying trip to the Chicago Housewares show, checking out the latest innovations in cookware, electronics, and gadgets. They also make orders from favorite vendors such as the cast iron purveyors Lodge Logic and Escali, from whom we get the cool miniature food scales. Also in Spring buying news, we’ve met with our cookbook rep, Diane, and our new cookbooks will be arriving over the next few weeks. Already in the store are the grandma-friendly series of cookbooks for little mermaids, fairies, and princesses! We’ve moved our children’s section to the center of the store so it’s more shoppable.

Tea Pots

At market this past January, Shari and Marsha ordered from a company called Coastline which specializes in traditional bone china tea pots, cups and saucers, and tea sets. It is always fun to see what products will begin showing up in our receiving department a few weeks after they get back. We are also doing our annual counting, considering what sold well last year and what we think people would like this year. Items are going into the fifty percent off area as we go through everything and all Christmas merchandiseis now seventy-five percent off. Our basics will begin arriving soon and as usual, we’ll call everyone in our request book when their requested item is back in stock. Stay warm and if you are in the area, come in for a free cup of Peet’s coffee, which is a dollar off a bag until January 16th!

Happy New Year

We made it through another busy holiday season here at That Kitchen Place, thanks to all our wonderful friends and customers!
